CUA Releases Fall Sports Schedules
6/16/09
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University of America Department of Athletics released a majority of the fall athletics schedules Monday. The 2009-2010 school year marks CUA's third year in the Landmark Conference. After a very successful fall in 2008, the Cardinals are looking to repeat or improve on their already high marks. With the women's soccer, men's soccer, and field hockey teams all reaching championship games in 2008, the bar has been set high. This year the Cardinals have their sights on even greater achievements.
In 2008, the women's field hockey team finished the season 14-8 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the Landmark Conference. It wasn't until the Landmark Conference Championship game that the Cardinals fell to a conference opponent. Juniata upset the Cardinals 2-1 in double overtime. CUA then went on to play in the ECAC tournament, falling to Kean in the semifinal, 3-2 in overtime. The CUA staff was also named coaching staff of the year for the third straight season.
The field hockey team will open its 2009 campaign on the road on September 5th as the Cardinals will travel to McDaniel College. The home opener for CUA will take place on Sunday, September 6th at 2 p.m. as Randolph-Macon will travel to Cardinal Stadium. CUA will play five non-conference games before opening its Landmark Conference schedule against Susquehanna at home on September 27th at 1 p.m.
The 2008 women's soccer team finished with a 10-8-2 record, going 4-1-1 in the Landmark Conference. The Cardinals ended the regular season falling only once in their last eight games. After an opening round 1-0 overtime win over Scranton, the Cardinals fell in heartbreaking fashion, 1-0 in double overtime to Moravian in the Landmark Conference Championship game. The Cardinals went on to play in the ECAC championship tournament falling in the quarterfinals to Westminster (Pa.), 1-0.
The 2009 Cardinals will look to improve on their record starting with a mid-week home opener against McDaniel on September 2, at 4:30 p.m. The Cardinals will then play in two tournaments including the DC Classic at CUA on September 12th and 13th. CUA will open its 2009 Landmark Conference campaign against Susquehanna on the road on September 26th.
Last fall the CUA men's soccer team finished 14-7, 3-4 in the Landmark Conference under second year head coach, Travis Beauchamp. Beauchamp and his staff were also honored by the conference as coaching staff of the year after falling in the Landmark Championship game 1-0 to Susquehanna. The team went on to play in the ECAC tournament. During the tournament the team picked up two wins, including a 3-2 double overtime win over Frostburg State. The Cardinals fell to King's College (Pa.) 2-1 in the ECAC final.
CUA will open the 2009 campaign on September 1st against Marymount at home. The Cardinals will play in two tournaments before opening their Landmark Conference schedule against Susquehanna University on the road on Saturday, September 26th at 3:30 p.m.
Finishing 8-27, 2-4 in the Landmark Conference, the women's volleyball team rebuilt with several young players under long time head coach Nagy Abdelrazek. Looking to improve on their record, CUA will open the 2009 campaign at Eastern Mennonite University on September 4th and 5th. The Cardinals will then play several matches before hosting the CUA Invitational on September 19th when CUA hosts Trinity College, Hood College and Marymount University. CUA will travel to Moravian for the first weekend of conference play taking on Susquehanna and Juniata on October 3rd and Scranton on October 4th. The Cardinals will then host the second weekend of conference matches on the weekend of October 17th and 18th taking on Moravian, Goucher and USMMA.
