Dear Friends,
Summer has officially arrived, and with that we draw to a close another successful year for our athletic teams. This spring, two more team conference championships as well as a run into the NCAA playoffs capped off an exciting year for CUA Athletics.
The women's lacrosse team finished off the 2009 conference season with wins over Scranton and Drew in the Landmark Conference playoffs, earning back-to-back conference championships and another bid to the NCAA playoffs. For the second year in a row, the team advanced to the NCAA regional finals and finished the season ranked 10th in the nation. Congratulations to Kate Robinson and Mary Swarthout for earning All-American recognition, with Kate being selected as the national player of the year for her position! With only two seniors on the roster, we are already excited for next season.
The baseball team finished the season just over .500 with a 22-20 record, but an early win over national preseason No. 1 Cortland State revealed a small preview of what was about to come. In the Landmark Conference tournament, CUA defeated No. 1 seeded Susquehanna in the opening round and went on to win their second-straight conference championship with a decisive 11-3 win over USMMA in the final. Congratulations to Coach Natoli and his team!
On May 14, 2009 the CUA Athletic Class of 2009 was honored at the Annual Athletics Senior Banquet. During the event several individuals were given special awards including Rosemary Dixon who received the Sr. Rosemary Donley Cup and Nick Olivero who received the R. Harris Cup. Both of those awards are given annually to a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics, academics, service and leadership. This was an outstanding senior class and we wish all of them luck in their next endeavors.
Lastly, please be on the lookout for our newly designed website which should be up and running by late August. The site will have several new features including action highlights and a "CUA Spotlight" section.
I would like to wish all of you and your families a safe and happy summer and we look forward to seeing you in the fall.
Sincerely,
Mike Allen
Director of Athletics
